The Simunaut’s Tale
In a world where emotion is erased, love rewrites the code
Ithaca, New York, October 1, 2025 – Waterloom Productions announces its independent film, The Simunaut’s Tale, a science fiction love story that explores the potential consequences of emerging technologies and the human condition. Currently in post-production, the film follows the journey of a young woman as she enters a simulation of the past, where she discovers the very feelings that define what it means to be human and finds herself falling in love.
Directed by Andy Watts, the film features a cast including Miku Martineau, Dylan Baker, Brian Dole, and Brian Fitzgerald. Watts's vision for the film is rooted in a profound philosophical challenge: the dynamic interplay between technological progress and the human condition.
The protagonist, Kata, a young woman from this emotionless future, enters a simulation and discovers human emotion. This allows the film to directly examine what it means to be human by contrasting a world devoid of emotion with one rich in it. It creates a thought-provoking narrative about the core components of human identity.
The technology that suppresses emotion and the technology of the simulation are the tools that drive the story. The film uses this novum to pose a "profound philosophical challenge" about the dynamic interplay between our tools and our values. It questions how advances in science and technology shape human experience and how our values, in turn, drive technological evolution.
"We constantly grapple with how our tools transform our lives and beliefs, and how our inherent values, in turn, drive the evolution of those tools," says Director Andy Watts. "This reciprocal influence is particularly evident in this era of accelerating innovation, requiring constant reflection and re-evaluation of our shared future. This film asks us to do just that."
The Simunaut’s Tale was filmed in the Finger Lakes Region of New York (Cortland and Ithaca) during August 2025, with its imagery playing a crucial role in conveying the story’s romantic elements. At the same time, Waterloom utilized local film production talent and the production facilities at Ithaca College to convey a futuristic setting in a compelling and believable vision of the future.
